1. In plural. In seal-engraving: hatching (hatching n.3) indicating the tinctures of the various elements of the coat of arms represented on the seal.

2. Originally and chiefly U.S. An enforced separation between white people and black people (or occasionally those of other racial groups) in a country, community, or establishment.
