单词 smidgen
释义

smidgenn.

Brit. /ˈsmɪdʒɪn/, U.S. /ˈsmɪdʒᵻn/
Forms:

α. 1800s smitchin, 1800s– smitchen, 1900s– smechin.

β. 1800s smidgin', 1800s– smidgen, 1800s– smidgeon, 1900s– smidgin, 1900s– smidging, 1900s– smidgion.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymon: smitch n.2
Etymology: Apparently originally (in α. forms) < an extended form of smitch n.2 (see note). With the α. forms compare slightly later smitchel n. With the β. forms compare smidge n.The identity of the extending element is unclear, and may be arbitrary; perhaps compare -in , variant of -ing suffix1, or perhaps compare luncheon n., the second element of which is also of uncertain identity and origin. Compare also in the same sense U.S. regional smidget (compare -et suffix1), recorded by Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. (2012) V. from 1896.
