Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin colōrāt- , colorāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin colōrāt-, past participial stem of colorāre colour v. + -ive suffix , after coloration n. Compare post-classical Latin colorativus productive of colour (13th cent. in a British source). O.E.D. Suppl. (1933) also gives the pronunciation (kǫ·lŏrĕtiv) /ˈkɒlərətɪv/.
