Etymology: < Colombia, Columbia (Spanish Colombia), the name of a country in north-western South America with coastlines on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans + -an suffix.The name Colombia was given to a large territory (formerly New Granada) which achieved independence from Spain in 1819. This entity broke up in 1830, with Venezuela and Ecuador becoming separate independent states, leaving the remainder (which included Panama until 1903) as the Granadine Confederation, which was renamed the United States of Colombia in 1863. The Republic of Colombia was established in 1886. With the form Columbian and the variant Columbia of the country's name in English compare the name in English of Christopher Columbus (c1450–1506; Spanish Cristóbal Colón , Italian Cristoforo Colombo ), Italian-born Spanish explorer, after whom the country was named; compare also Columbian adj. and n.
