Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian agitato; French agitato.
Etymology: < Italian agitato (not dated in dictionaries of Italian as a musical instruction, and apparently rare in this use before the 19th cent.; a1342 in sense ‘moved to and fro’, a1460 in sense ‘(of a person's mind or feelings) disturbed’), use as adjective of past participle of agitare agitate v. In use as adjective originally via French agitato (1768 in the passage translated in quot. ?1775 at sense A. 1; 1813 or earlier as noun).
