释义 |
coccon.Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from a West African language. Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < a West African language. Similar words are attested in several West African languages (compare Twi kóokó one of three kinds of edible root, Mende koko taro tuber, Ga koko plant with edible roots resembling a yam, Yoruba kókò taro tuber), although these languages are not related to each other, so these words may either show borrowing within Africa, or borrowings from the Caribbean word (although the latter explanation is less likely on phonological grounds). The taro may have been introduced to the Caribbean from the Pacific region, so a borrowing from a Polynesian language has sometimes been suggested (compare Hawaiian kokole , formerly and regionally totole , taro of the fifth generation), but this is unlikely on phonological and semantic grounds. The usual Polynesian name of the plant is reflected by taro n. Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈcocco. the world > food and drink > food > fruit and vegetables > vegetables > root vegetable > [noun] > taro 1756 P.
