单词 aghasted
释义

aghastedadj.

Brit. /əˈɡɑːstᵻd/, /əˈɡastᵻd/, U.S. /əˈɡæstəd/
Forms:

α. late Middle English agastid, 1500s–1600s agasted, 1700s– aghasted, 1800s egasted (Irish English (Wexford)).

β. 1500s–1600s agasht, 1600s–1700s agashed.

γ. 1600s aghasht.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: agast v., -ed suffix1, aghast adj., aghast v., -ed suffix2.
Etymology: In early use < agast v. (see discussion of forms at that entry) + -ed suffix1. In later use < either aghast adj. or aghast v. + -ed suffix2.In β. forms probably largely due to confusion with gash adj.1, although some instances of the β. forms may simply show typographical or compositorial errors. With the γ. forms compare the β. forms at aghast adj.
Now rare (nonstandard in later use).
In early use: †frightened, terrified (cf. agast v.) (obsolete). Later: filled with shock or horror; made aghast. Cf. aghast adj.
