释义

CO2n.

Brit. /ˌsiːəʊˈtuː/, U.S. /ˌsiˌoʊˈtu/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: C n., O n.1, two n.
Etymology: < CO₂, chemical formula representing carbon dioxide < C n., chemical symbol for carbon + O n.1, chemical symbol for oxygen + two n.The modern notation of CO₂ did not become established until the mid 19th cent. John Dalton ( New Syst. Chem. Philos. (1810) II. 381–2) regarded carbon dioxide (carbonic acid) as composed of one atom of carbon (referred to as charcoal) with two of oxygen. The chemical symbols for carbon and oxygen were introduced by Berzelius. He also assigned carbon dioxide the modern formula, but wrote it CO². 1814 J. Black tr. J. J. Berzelius Attempt Sci. Syst. Mineral. 73 This mineral, which most frequently appears mixed with greater quantities than in the present example of magnesia, lime, or carbonate of manganese, is obviously a carbonate of iron composed = FeO² + 2CO².1840 H. Reid Elem. Chem. 180 The oxalic acid consists of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, in such proportions that they may theoretically be looked upon as arranged on the form of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and water—or symbolically, CO+ CO² + HO.1849 H. Watts tr. L. Gmelin Hand-bk. Chem. II. 189 The sulphates of bismuth, silver, and protoxide of mercury..are resolved into reduced metal and equal volumes of sulphurous and carbonic acid gases: AgO, SO³ + C = Ag + SO² + CO².
Carbon dioxide, a colourless, odourless gas produced by the burning of organic compounds and fossil fuels, by the processes of respiration and decomposition, and by volcanic activity, and absorbed by plants during photosynthesis. In later use, often in the context of environmental issues and climate change.
