Etymology: < French clocher, clochier (12th cent. in Littré), in Old Northern French clockier , cloquier , corresponding to medieval Latin cloc(c)ārium , < cloc(c)a , cloque , cloche , bell. Occasionally having the suffix -er corrupted to -ard suffix.
A bell-tower or campanile; a belfry.
