Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Oneida. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably also partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Oneida onę·yóteʔ; French Oneïout; Dutch Onneyatte.
Etymology: < Oneida onę·yóteʔ, lit. ‘erected stone’, an Oneida village name referring to the large syenite boulder traditionally said to have appeared near the main Oneida settlement in its successive locations. In α. forms probably via Dutch Onneyatte (1635 as village name); in β. forms via French Oneïout (1656 as village name, 1666 or earlier as name of people, 1658 as Onneiout).In form Honnehiout after French Honnehiout (1697 in the source translated in quot. 1698 at sense A. 1).
