释义 | coal-hoodn.α. Scottish 1600s cole-hooding, 1800s coal-hooden. β. 1800s cole-hood, 1800s– coal-hood. γ. 1800s coal-hoodie. δ. 1800s coally-hood, 1800s coaly-hood. British regional. Now rare. Any of several birds with a mainly black head, spec. †(a) Scottish the reed bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus (obsolete); (b) the bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula; (c) the blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla; (d) the coal tit, Periparus ater. The bird referred to in quot. 1818 is uncertain: Jamieson (1825) identifies it as "the Black-cap", but that name is itself ambiguous. The context (contrasting types of bird which the speaker likes and dislikes) suggests that a bird such as the hooded crow, Corvus cornix, or the jackdaw, C. monedula, might have been intended.
