Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic clab-dubh.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic clab-dubh (plural claba-dubha ), lit. ‘black open mouth’ < clab open mouth (Irish clab , originally a derogatory word for the mouth (17th cent. or earlier); probably < English clap n.1; with the sense perhaps compare clap n.1 9b) + dubh black (Early Irish dub , cognate with Welsh du black, probably < the same Indo-European base as deaf adj.).The α. forms, although attested earlier, probably show variants of the β. forms with assimilation of the medial bilabial consonant to the initial velar. The β. forms with medial /p/ reflect the pronunciation of b in Scottish Gaelic (voiceless and unaspirated).
