Etymology: < civil adj. + right n. Compare French droit civil civil law, collection of laws relating to the rights of the individual, (in plural) such rights (13th cent. in Old French). Compare civil liberty n.
The right of the individual within society (in early use not as a fixed collocation). In later use: spec. (chiefly in plural) each of the political, social, and economic rights which are recognized as the entitlement of every member of a community and which can be upheld by appeal to the law. In later use frequently attributive, now esp. with reference to the American Civil Rights Movement (see civil rights movement n. at Compounds).
