Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: aero- comb. form, Greek -βάτης.
Etymology: < aero- comb. form + ancient Greek -βάτης ( < the stem of βαίνειν to go (see basis n.) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns), apparently after aerostat n. (see quot. 1879). Compare Hellenistic Greek ἀεροβάτης person who walks the air (see aerobate v.). Compare aerobatics n.1
Obsolete.
A flying machine.Apparently an isolated use.

1879 Scribner's Monthly Feb. 570/1 The term aërostat..cannot be applied to such a structure [i.e. a flying machine], as it describes a vessel which stands or is upheld in the air... Nothing has been proposed which seems to me so..logically correct in application, as the exact converse of ‘aërostat’, namely, aërobat (ἀήρ—βαίνειν), meaning that which can go, as opposed to that which only can stand, in the air.
