Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin aerārius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin aerārius (adjective) of or connected with coinage, money, or the treasury, (noun) citizen of the lowest class, who paid only a poll tax ( < aer- , aes copper, bronze, or brass, money ( < the same Indo-European base as Old English ār brass, bronze, copper: see ore n.2) + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix; originally after German Aerarier, plural (1828 in the passage translated in quot. 1828 at sense A.).In aerarian tribune at sense B. after classical Latin tribunus aerārius.
Roman History. Now rare.

They formed a panel of jurors in the late Republic and early Principate.
