Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: platinum n., -ic suffix; Latin platinum , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < platinum n. or its etymon post-classical Latin platinum + -ic suffix, after French platinique (1789 in the passage translated in quot. 1790 at main sense); compare post-classical Latin platinicum (1811 or earlier: see below). With platinic chloride n. at Compounds compare French chlorure platinique (1854 or earlier). With platinic oxide n. at Compounds compare post-classical Latin oxidum platinicum (1811 or earlier), French oxyde platinique (1843 or earlier). Compare later platinous adj.
Chemistry.
Of or containing platinum, esp. in the tetravalent state. Cf. platinous adj.
