Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin aedīlitāt-, aedīlitās.
Etymology: < classical Latin aedīlitāt-, aedīlitās office of an aedile at Rome, aedileship, office of a municipal aedile < aedīlis aedile n. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). In sense 2 after French édilité (1831 in this sense (now rare); 14th cent. in Middle French in sense 1). Compare Spanish edilidad (1385 as †edilidat), Italian edilità (first half of the 14th cent.).
