Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French potacion, potation action of drinking, a drink, action of drinking a lot, excessive drinking (13th cent. in Anglo-Norman; French potation ; now rare and archaic), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin pōtātiōn-, pōtātiō drinking party, in post-classical Latin also excessive drinking (Vetus Latina), a drink (4th cent.), a medicinal drink (6th cent.), action of drinking (6th cent.) < pōtāt- , past participial stem of pōtāre to drink ( < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the Indo-European base of classical Latin bībere : see bever n.) + -iō -ion suffix1.
