Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Aechmea.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Aechmea, genus name ( H. Ruiz & J. Pavon Florae Peruvianae, et Chilensis Prodromus (1794) I. 47/1) < ancient Greek αἰχμή point of a spear, point ( < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian iešmas , Old Prussian aysmis spit) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix1; so called on account of the rigid points on the calyces.
Botany.
A plant of the tropical American bromeliad genus Aechmea, comprising predominantly epiphytic species with stiff, spiny leaves arranged in a basal rosette. Also (in form Aechmea): the genus itself.

1859 R. Spruce Let. 20 Oct. in Notes of Botanist on Amazon & Andes (1908) II. xx. 240 The other (apparently an Æchmea) has broadish soft leaves and large violet flowers looking at a distance more like those of an Iris or an Amaryllidea.
1881 P. Henderson Handbk. Plants 8/2 Æchmea... None of the species are found in cultivation, except in rare collections.
1903 Agric. News 14 Feb. 57 Various species of Aechmea or ‘Wild pines’ are common on trees in the moist forests of this part of the world.
1960 Times 3 Dec. 9/4 (caption) An arrangement of house plants containing..a narrow-leaved codiaeum, an aechmea, and Sciadapsus ‘Marble Green’.
