Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Aechmea.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Aechmea, genus name ( H. Ruiz & J. Pavon Florae Peruvianae, et Chilensis Prodromus (1794) I. 47/1) < ancient Greek αἰχμή point of a spear, point ( < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian iešmas , Old Prussian aysmis spit) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹; so called on account of the rigid points on the calyces.

Botany.

A plant of the tropical American bromeliad genus Aechmea, comprising predominantly epiphytic species with stiff, spiny leaves arranged in a basal rosette. Also (in form Aechmea): the genus itself.
