Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, family n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + family n. With sense 2a compare French sous-famille (1770 or earlier in a botanical context).
1. A subdivision of a human family. In modern use chiefly: (Sociology) a family (consisting of a person with a partner or child, or both) living with another (related) family group. Also occasionally in extended use of people living together in a community.In early use in biblical contexts.
