δ. 1900s– Adyg Brit. /ˈadᵻɡ/, U.S. /ˈædəɡ/.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Adyghe. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Adyghe adəge; Russian adyge; Russian adyg; Russian adygi, adyg; Russian adygejskij.
Etymology: < Adyghe adəge, self-designation, perhaps via Russian adyge (indeclinable), although that is first attested later (1840 or earlier). Compare German Adige (1782 or earlier), probably < Italian Adighe (c1502 as Adige; < Adyghe).Official Russian usage distinguishes between adygi (adjective adygskij ) ‘people whose self-designation is adəge ’ (comprising also the subdivisions known as Kabardians (compare Kabardian n.), Circassians (compare Circassian n.), and Shapsugs), and adygejcy (adjective adygejskij ), the part of the people living in or originating from the Republic of Adygea. In δ. forms < Russian adyg member of the people (1822 or earlier). In β. forms < Russian adygi, plural of adyg. In γ. forms probably < the stem of Russian adygejskij ( < Adygeja Adygea + -skij, suffix forming adjectives) belonging or relating to the Adyghe people or their language, or specifically to the part of the people living in the Republic of Adygea.
