Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chiche.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French chiche, ciche (13th cent. in Old French), alteration (probably after chiche miserly, parsimonious: see Chichevache n.) of cice (also 13th cent.) < classical Latin cicer Cicer n. Now superseded by chickpea n.Compare Italian cece (late 13th cent.), Old Occitan ceze, cezer. N.E.D. (1889) gives the pronunciation as (tʃitʃ) /tʃɪtʃ/.
