单词 mata hari
释义

Mata Harin.

Brit. /ˌmɑːtə ˈhɑːri/, U.S. /ˈˌmɑdə ˈhɑri/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mata Hari.
Etymology: < Mata Hari, a pseudonym of Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod, neé Zelle (1876–1917), Dutch exotic dancer, executed as a spy by the French at Vincennes, near Paris, during the First World War (1914–18).The pseudonym is of uncertain origin but is usually explained as < Malay matahari sun < mata eye + hari day (MacLeod lived in the Dutch East Indies from 1897 to 1902). The possibility of its being a factitious collocation of Sanskrit mātā mother + Hari, the name of a deity, has also been suggested.
A woman likened in some way to Mata Hari; esp. a beautiful and seductive female spy.
