Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish chicana.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish chicana (1958 or earlier as noun; also as adjective), feminine form corresponding to chicano Chicano n.Popularized as a self-designation by women of Mexican origin involved in the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s (compare Chicano movement n. at Chicano n. and adj. Compounds).
