In sense 2 after early modern German advocatie (1530 as advocacei ) or its etymon post-classical Latin advocatia office of an ecclesiastical advocate, ecclesiastical patronage, advowson (10th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin advocātus advocate n. + -ia -y suffix3; compare -acy suffix.
