Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish afyon; Arabic afyūn; Dutch amfioen; Portuguese anfião.
Etymology: Partly (i) < (a) Ottoman Turkish afyon (Turkish afyon ) or its etymon (b) Arabic afyūn (also, with intrusive -n- , anfyūn ) < Hellenistic Greek ὄπιον opium n.; and partly (ii) (in β. forms) < (a) Dutch amfioen (1596 as amfion in the passage translated in quot. 1598) and its etymon (b) Portuguese anfião (1513) < Arabic anfyūn. Compare post-classical Latin amphium (13th cent.), Spanish afion, †aphion (1557), anfion (1609), and also Persian afyūn.With the variety of forms and etymons compare:1598 W. Phillip tr. J. H. van Linschoten Disc. Voy. E. & W. Indies i. lxxviii. 124/1 Amfion so called by the Portingales, is by the Arabians, Mores, and Indians called Affion, in latine Opio or opium.1700 J. Jones Myst. Opium Reveal'd i. 6 Some in those Parts call it Amphion, (or Ampion) for like Reasons, all (doubtless) deriving the Names, that I have mentioned, from the Greek Word Ὄπιος the Latines saying Opium, (whence we have it) the Arabians Ofium, and some other Eastern People Afium, or Affium, and others Amphion, &c.
