The execution of a rapid melodic passage, originally conceived as the dividing of each of a succession of long notes into several short ones; such a passage itself, a florid phrase or piece of melody, a run; esp. as a variation on, or accompaniment to, a theme or ‘plain song’; hence often nearly = descant n. to run division: to execute such a passage or variation; also figurative (cf. descant v.) Obsolete.
