单词 chep
释义

chepn.

Brit. /tʃɛp/, U.S. /tʃɛp/
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: chip n.1
Etymology: Probably a variant of chip n.1 Much earlier currency of this form in this meaning is probably implied by post-classical Latin cheppa share-beam of a plough (from 13th cent. in British sources; in 14th cent. also as sheppa ), variant of chippa , chippum (from 13th cent. in British sources; < chip n.1).It is unlikely that there is any immediate connection with Middle French cep piece of wood supporting the ploughshare (a1408; in modern French regional use occasionally chep ) < classical Latin cippus cippus n. In Anglo-Norman the corresponding word cep is found only in rather distantly related meanings, denoting stocks (for restraint), the stock of a plant, or in related legal use.
Chiefly English regional (southern). Now rare (chiefly historical).
The share-beam of a plough; esp. a horizontal beam forming the sole of a turnwrest plough, to the end of which the ploughshare is fixed. Cf. chip n.1
