Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian āqā ḵān.

Etymology: < Persian āqā ḵān (1818 with reference to the Nizari leader) < āqā , respectful form of address (see aga n.¹) + ḵān lord, ruler (see khan n.¹).

(The title of) the spiritual leader of the Nizari sect of Ismaili Muslims. Hence: a person who resembles the Aga Khan in wealth, power, influence, etc.The first Aga Khan was given his title in 1818 by the Shah of Persia. The fourth Aga Khan (Karim Al-Hussain Shah, b. 1937) inherited the title in 1957.
