Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < a- prefix1 + fret n.2 (see discussion at a- prefix1), or perhaps < Italian affrettare to speed (something) up, to incite (a person) (1st half of the 14th cent.), probably < af- af- prefix + fretta urgency, haste (a1292, of disputed origin).
Obsolete. rare.
A sudden attack; an onslaught.
