Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Italian. Or (ii) a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian politico; Spanish político.
Etymology: < either Italian politico (1585: see politic adj. and n.) or Spanish político (1428 or earlier: see politic adj. and n.). Compare earlier politic n. 2, politician n. 2.
Now chiefly colloquial and somewhat derogatory.
A politician. Now also: a person holding strong political views or acting with political motivation.
