Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Chantecler.
Etymology: < Old French Chantecler (late 12th cent.; French Chanteclair ), the proper name of the cock in the Roman de Renard < chanter to sing, crow (see chant v.) + cler clear adv.Compare Middle Dutch Canticlēr , Canticleer ( < French). The form chauntrell at β. forms appears to show alteration after chanter n.2 and -el suffix2; compare -rel suffix. The remaining β. forms show simplification of the consonant cluster -cl- . The γ. forms show folk-etymological alteration after chant v. and it pron.
A proper name applied traditionally (chiefly in literature) to: a cockerel. Later also as a common noun. Cf. bruin n., Reynard n. 1, Tibert n., etc.The character of the cockerel Chanticleer appears in the fable tradition of Reynard the Fox (see note at Reynard n. 1).
