Etymology: < French chantefable (A. Bida 1878, in his translation into modern French of the Old French text Aucassin et Nicolette (compare quot. 1879); 1924 or earlier denoting a modern form of sung verse) < chanter to sing (see chant v.) + fable fable n., as modernizing alteration of Old French cantefable cantefable n. Compare slightly later cantefable n.In form chantfable with alteration after chant n.
1. A medieval French ballad, consisting of parts of spoken prose alternating with parts of sung verse; this type of ballad as a literary genre. Cf. cantefable n. 1.Often with reference to the 13th-cent. text Aucassin et Nicolette; see note at cantefable n. 1.
