(1792) II. 181; also chabasie (1795 or earlier)) < Greek χαβάζιε (in former editions of the treatise Λιθικά or Περὶ λίθων of the pseudo-Orpheus (a400), up to the publication of the edition by Tyrwhitt in 1781), transmission error for Byzantine Greek χαλάζιε , vocative of χαλάζιος , kind of precious stone, use as noun of χαλάζιος (adjective) of or connected with hail < ancient Greek χάλαζα hail (see chalaza n.) + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives; so called from its form and colour (Pliny); compare also Byzantine Greek χαλαζίας, χαλαζίτης λίθος, classical Latin chalāzias, chalāzius lapis (both in Pliny); the meaning being ‘hail-stone’.With the β. forms compare -ite suffix¹.
