释义

-anasuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -ana.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -ana (in e.g. Virgiliana (1502 or earlier), Scaligerana (1634 or earlier)), neuter plural (perhaps short for e.g. opera Virgiliana Virgil's works) of classical Latin -ānus -an suffix.Found in adaptations of foreign-language words from at least the first half of the 19th cent. (e.g. Americana n.), and slightly later in formations within English (e.g. Southeyana n., cricketana n.). For formations from bases ending in /ɪ/ or // (e.g. Rossettiana n.), see -iana suffix, formations in which are found from at least the late 17th cent. Many formations derived from a proper name are parallel to adjectives in -an suffix, e.g. Africana n., Americana n. N.E.D. (1884) also gives the pronunciation (ēi·nă) /ˈeɪnə/.
