Origin: A borrowing from Hindi, combined with an English element. Etymons: Hindi cā̃p- , cā̃pnā , -ing suffix2.
Etymology: < Hindi cā̃p-, stem of cā̃pnā to press, to squeeze (see shampoo v.) + -ing suffix2. Compare later shampoo v. 1a and shampooing n.Quot. 1698 wrongly associates the Indian word with the presumed origins of the practice, which was thought to have been introduced to India from China.
Obsolete.
