单词 ogygian
释义

Ogygianadj.1

Brit. /əʊˈdʒɪdʒɪən/, U.S. /oʊˈdʒɪdʒiən/
Forms: 1500s–1600s Ogigian, 1600s 1800s– Ogygian.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Ōgygius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Ōgygius of or relating to Ogyges, Theban, ancient ( < ancient Greek Ὠγύγιος < Ὤγυγος, Ὠγύγης, the name of Ogyges, a legendary king of Thebes, in Boeotia + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. It is possible that the personal name Ὤγυγος , Ὠγύγης may represent a back-formation from the adjective, invented by the ancient grammarians. The adjective is of unknown origin and its precise sense is unclear, but it appears to indicate extreme antiquity. It is unclear whether the following example represents this adjective or Ogygian adj.2, or with which precise connotations:1885 G. Meredith Diana of Crossways I. i. 25 The comic of it, the adventurous, the tragic, they make devilish, to kindle their Ogygian hilarity.
Of, associated with, or relating to the mythical Attic or Boeotian king Ogyges or his realm. Also (in extended use): of great age (rare).A great flood was supposed to have occurred during Ogyges' reign.
