Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: centro- comb. form, -mere comb. form.
Etymology: < centro- comb. form + -mere comb. form. In sense 2 after German Centromer (W. Waldeyer 1903, in Hertwig Handb. d. Entwick. d. Wirbeltiere (1906) I. 204; now usually Zentromer).
Cell Biology.
1. A region within the oocyst of a malaria parasite ( Plasmodium) around which sporozoites develop. Obsolete. rare.

1901 L. O. Howard Mosquitoes ii. 51 These clear spaces are known as centromeres, and they are rapidly surrounded by minute short dark lines, which, when seen under a very high power of the microscope, are shown to be spindle-shaped cells, known as blasts.
