Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin creditivus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin creditivus that gives credence, that believes (from late 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin crēdit- , past participial stem of crēdere to believe (see credit v.) + -īvus -ive suffix. With sense A. 1 compare earlier credential letter n. at credential adj. a, letter of credence n. at credence n. Phrases 2.
