Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: centre n.1, -ist suffix.
Etymology: < centre n.1 (compare centre n.1 15) + -ist suffix.The uses with reference to France in quots. 1872 at sense A. and 1874 at sense B. are not paralleled in contemporary French sources. In quots. 1886 at sense A. and 1889, 1928 at sense B. with reference to the German Centrumspartei (1870; now Zentrumspartei), a conservative German party which was originally chiefly associated with Roman Catholic interests; it was founded in 1870, dissolved itself in 1933, and was refounded in 1945.
