Stress is determined by a range of factors though some degree of stress is usually maintained on this combining form, e.g. centigray Brit. /ˈsɛntᵻɡreɪ/, U.S. /ˈsɛn(t)əˌɡreɪ/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin centi-.
Etymology: < classical Latin centi-, combining form (in e.g. centifolius centifolious adj., centipeda centipede n.) of centum hundred (see centum n.2); compare -i- connective.Attested earliest in the Middle English period in the French and Latin loan centiloquium n., and subsequently in the Latin loan centipede n. Formations within English where this element has the general sense ‘a hundred’ are found in the apparently isolated mid 17th-cent. centireligious adj., and subsequently from the 19th cent. From the end of the 18th cent. in the names of units of measurement and related words (see sense 1) after French centi- (1793 in centimètre centimetre n., centilitre centilitre n.), earliest in loans and adaptations from French; formations within English in this sense are found from the early 20th cent.
