Etymology: Partly < character n. + -ization suffix, and partly (especially in later use) < characterize v. + -ation suffix.In sense 1b after French caractérisation (1870 in this sense, in caractérisation permanente: A. de Quatrefages Charles Darwin et ses précurseurs français i. iii. 123; 1840 in sense ‘description or analysis of the character of a person or thing’).
