Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French caserne.
Etymology: < French caserne, †cazerne temporary building in a garrison town for the accommodation of troops, (in later use more generally) barracks (1547 in Middle French, originally specifically denoting a shelter for soldiers guarding the ramparts of a town), apparently < Old Occitan cazerna , quazerna group of four people (end of the 13th cent.) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *quaderna , variant of classical Latin quaterna , neuter plural of classical Latin quaternus (see quatern n.). Compare Spanish caserna (1702), Dutch kazerne (1710 as †caserne), German Kaserne (17th cent.), Swedish kasern (1691 as †cazerner, plural), all < French.In β. forms with alteration by folk-etymological association with arms n.; compare Italian caserma (1667; 1617 as †case erne, plural), Swedish †cassarme (1705).
Military. Now historical except in French-speaking contexts.
In early use: one of a series of small temporary buildings erected in a garrison town, typically between the ramparts and civilian houses, for the accommodation of troops. Hence (more generally): a barracks.
