Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adumbrāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin adumbrāre to shade, to obscure (see adumbrate v.). Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French aombrer, Old French, Middle French aümbrer (c1155), Anglo-Norman and Middle French (rare) adumbrer, Middle French, French †adombrer (13th or 14th cent. in Anglo-Norman, subsequently from 1572; in early use an alteration after the Latin etymon, in later use probably an independent loan < Italian), Italian adombrare (a1321 as †aombrare; also †adumbrare).Quot. 1535 could alternatively show a transmission error for obumber v.
