Etymology: < classical Latin alabastrītēs onyx, stalagmite (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀλαβαστρίτης (also ἀλαβαστίτης ) calcitic alabaster, use as noun (short for ἀλαβαστρίτης λίθος alabastrite stone) of ἀλαβαστρίτης , adjective < ancient Greek ἀλάβαστρος alabaster n. + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare earlier alabaster n. and also alabastrite n.In the plural form alabastritae in quot. 1756 after classical Latin plurals in -ītae of nouns in -ītēs -ite suffix1. The following shows isolated borrowing of a different but related word in Pliny, classical Latin alabastrītis (feminine), denoting a precious stone ( < Hellenistic Greek ἀλαβαστρίτις, feminine of ἀλαβαστρίτης: see above):1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World II. xxxvii. x. 624 The stone Alabastrites [L. alabastritis] is found about Alabastrum, a citie in Ægypt..white of colour it is, and entermeddled with sundrie colours.
