Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic al.
Etymology: < Arabic al the.Found from the Middle English period onwards in borrowings ultimately from Arabic, originally and chiefly via French and Latin. Early examples are shown by algorism n., alembic n., almanac n., alchemy n., algebra n., alkali n. The identity of the element is opaque in most English words in which it occurs. However, because of its frequency in borrowings ultimately of Arabic origin it has some salience as an indicator of such an origin. Some words and forms in al- probably reflect folk-etymological identification of elements of other origin with the Arabic definite article: compare ζ. forms at admiral n. and perhaps alkedavy n.
