Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element.; modelled on German lexical items. Etymons: Greek ἀκόλουθος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκόλουθος following (see acolyte n.) + -ic suffix. In sense 1 after German akoluthisch (1860 or earlier). In sense 2 after German akoluthe (R. Semon in Die Mneme (ed. 2) 1908 , p. 18).

2. Philosophy and Psychology. In the terminology of the German biologist Richard Wolfgang Semon (1859–1918): designating the phase following the initial excitation of a sensation; belonging or relating to such a phase.Now chiefly with reference to Bertrand Russell (see quot. 1921).
