Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acolastus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Acolastus, title of a play by Gulielmus Gnapheus (Willem de Volder) on the prodigal son (1529; compare quot. 1540) < ancient Greek ἀκόλαστος undisciplined, licentious < ἀ- a- prefix6 + the stem of κολάζειν to chastise ( < κόλος docked, truncated (see colure n.) + -άζειν, suffix forming verbs from nouns or adjectives) + -τος, suffix forming verbal adjectives.
