Forms: 1500s– Celtiberi, 1700s– Keltiberi (now rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Celtibēri.
Etymology: < classical Latin Celtibēri, plural < Celtae , plural (see Celt n.1) + Ibēri , plural (see Iberian adj.), probably after Hellenistic Greek Κελτίβηρες . Compare Celtiberian n. and the Latin and Greek forms cited at that entry.Compare also the following example of Old English Sceltiuerin (dative plural) in which the ethnonym appears in an erroneous form as a result of faulty word division, perhaps already in the exemplar (the final -s of the preceding Latin word ingens has been mistakenly attached to the ethnonym):eOE tr. Orosius Hist. (BL Add.) (1980) iv. xii. 111 Wearþ Romanum se mæsta ege from Sceltiuerin [OE Tiber. sceltiferin], Ispania folce [L. ingens Celtiberorum metus].
With plural agreement. With the. The peoples inhabiting the north-central part of the Iberian peninsula in the pre-Roman and early Roman period, considered collectively. Cf. Celtiberian n. and adj.
