Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French partage.
Etymology: < Middle French partage action of dividing something into shares (1283 in Old French; French partage ), share, portion, (specifcally) share in an inheritance (1325) < partir part v. + -age -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin partagium share of an inheritance (13th cent.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the following note on variation of pronunciation: ‘formerly naturalized (pā·ɹtėdʒ) /ˈpɑːtɪdʒ/; but, since 18th cent., usually treated as French (partā·ʒ) /parˈtaʒ/. (‘A word merely French’ Johnson.)’
